All discussions at the open forum meeting have been posted on our Facebook group (we didn’t have enough time to cover everything and many members had a lot to say).

Meeting Recap: Events and Licensing!

December 4, 2009 Leave a comment

Wow, last night was intense.  We covered a lot of upcoming events and discussed a pretty hot topic that got audience members pretty fired up — state vs free market licensing.

First, I’ll cover some of the events.  Click on this link to view powerpoint from the meeting.

  • Next weekend, December 12/13, some of us are carpooling to Easton/Bethlehem to help Jake Towne hand out flyers for his campaign.  If you are interested, let us know.  We are sleeping overnight in Easton.
  • Students for Liberty INTERNATIONAL Conference!  SLF IS REIMBURSING AND HOTEL IS COVERED!  It takes place  February 12th – Sunday, February 14th, 2010 at American University in Washington DC.
Please fill out a registration FORM and then pay the FEE.  SEND YOUR RECEIPT TO  Make sure to click on the link that says that we are an affiliated group, and we/you will get a discount.
Also, if you’re bored, nominate an SLF member for member of the year!
  • Many members were curious about some SLF members attending CPAC.  CPAC will be held February 18-20, 2010 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington D.C.
Please see Year of Youth and Campaign for Liberty for more details — many members are going to antagonize conservatives while many are going just to network and socialize with fellow liberty lovers.  It’s all up to you!
To register, please click here and select the student ticket and Adam’s Inn package and use code YOUTH for a 20 dollar discount.  4 nights and a student ticket will cost only 109 dollars! This is a great deal!  Although SLF is not going to be reimbursing for CPAC, the price is so minimal that many should be able to attend!

Now, the meeting itself was on state licensing vs. free market licensing.

I took two pictures and copy/pasted them together. 🙂

I believe, while many of us disagreed, we at least found fault in the current system — at least with corruption/lobbying/special interests.

I would say that I prefer the free market solution to licensing, by offering it privately, because I believe strongly in personal responsibility, competition, and choice.  That’s my simple answer.

First meeting was . . . awesome!

20 pizzas and 15 2 liters later . . .

I’m glad that the first meeting of the fall term went smoothly!

We saw lots of new faces (75% of the room!) and people actually stayed for the whole meeting!

Our main discussion focused on introductions to the group and the 9/12 rally in DC.

We had elections after the meeting, and the results were . . .

Pericles Niarchos, president
Tyler Frazier, treasurer
Stacy Litz, vice president
Deanna Quinones, secretary

REMEMBER, in SLF we have COMMITTEES, such as with public relations, journalism, and music, even, so there’s always ways to get involved and recognized on a higher level (resume, anyone?)

Thanks for a great meeting!  Hope to see you next week at Students Rights Week!
